What size solar system do you need in Tasmania?

Tasmanian homes can use a lot of electricity, particularly through winter when heating, hot water and longer periods spent indoors can push power usage up.

The right solar system size depends on your household usage, available roof space, when you use electricity and whether you're planning to add a battery, EV or other high-energy appliances down the track.

6.6kW Solar System

Our starting point for most homes. A 6.6kW system is a sensible minimum for most Tasmanian households, including two adults with moderate electricity use who want to reduce their power bills.

8kW Solar System

A good middle ground for many Tasmanian households. The extra capacity can help homes with higher daytime usage, electric heating or families that simply use more power throughout the year.

10kW Solar System

Better suited to larger households or homes running more electrical appliances, heat pumps, pool equipment or EV charging. It also gives you more generation capacity during Tasmania's shorter winter days.

13kW+ Solar Systems

For larger homes, high electricity users or households planning for batteries, EVs and greater electricity use in the future. If you have the roof space and the usage to justify it, a larger system can help you generate more of your own power across the year.

We'll size it for your home, not just sell you the biggest system

Tasmania's seasons, roof orientation and household heating requirements all matter when designing solar. We'll look at your actual power bills, roof, usage patterns and future plans before recommending the system size that makes sense for your property.

System size guide

Choosing the right solar system for your property

Every home and business uses power differently, so we size your system around your actual energy use and power bills. As a starting point, choose the setup that looks most like yours.

One of the easier parts of building a new house with solar. If you prefer no fuss and straight to the point service, then my hot tip is to give Rest Energy a buzz. George was beyond helpful, concise, and when a later issue popped up (due to the house and not the solar), he immediately was in contact to resolve it. I rarely leave a review on anyone, unless the product and service went above and beyond.

My partner and I can thoroughly recommend George and his team in the highest possible way. From the initial discussions to establish our needs, to the quoting process, then the installation itself, things could not have been smoother from our side. This industry does receive bad press because of dodgy operators, this is certainly not the case with Rest Energy Tas, professional in all dealings, on time installation and then always there for ny ongoing queries, not that we have had many as the hand over we received was very extensive. We can only say talk to Rest Energy with his highest recommendation John R

After the great installation of 10kW of solar panels and a Myenergi system 4 years ago by George we decided to take advantage of the recent battery support package and get a FranklinWH system for backup installed. This has a long warranty on all parts. Great work by George with all the tricky work done in one day.

Excellent Service and Fantastic Results! George and his team at Rest Energy installed our solar system in the middle of last year, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. Over summer, we actually had a credit on our power bill, and throughout winter our bill has been minimal. The system has exceeded our expectations in terms of performance and savings. The service has also been outstanding—George has been quick to respond to any questions we've had, and his support has been consistent from installation through to follow-up. Highly recommend Rest Energy for anyone considering going solar!

Why go solar

Why Tasmanians go solar

Most people go solar for two reasons: lower power bills and lower emissions. Plenty of our customers want to rely less on energy retailers and protect the household budget from rising prices.

Others simply want to do their bit for a cleaner Tasmania. A well-designed system does both.

How much solar can you install?

Most Tasmanian homes on single-phase power can connect up to 10 kVA of inverter capacity under TasNetworks' standard rules, and homes with three-phase power can go bigger.

That covers even large household bills, as long as you have the roof or ground space. We take care of the TasNetworks application for you.

Bigger isn't always better

The best system is the one that matches what your home uses during the day. Power you use yourself saves around 31c per kWh on Aurora's standard rate, but power you send back to the grid earns approximately 9 cents per kWh.

So we size your system to use as much of your own solar as possible, and add a battery when the numbers stack up. Your quote shows the expected savings for your home.

Your property

Roof mount or ground mount?

Most homes go on the roof. If your roof faces the wrong way, is heavily shaded, or you'd rather not see panels on it, a ground-mounted system can be the better option.

We build both, and we'll tell you on site which makes more sense for your block and your budget.

Your roof

Will your roof work for solar?

We factor all of this into your quote.

North is best

A north-facing roof gets the most sun through the day. North-east and north-west are still very good.

East and west work too

East or west roofs still make good power, with lower output than a north-facing roof.

Shade is the big one

Shading from a chimney, a flue, trees or the neighbours' place cuts output. On shaded or split roofs we often use microinverters, which run each panel on its own, so one shaded panel doesn't drag the rest down.

Gear we use

Budget or premium, installed the same way

We offer a budget range and a premium range, and both get the same installation standard. Everything is backed by the manufacturer's warranty, plus our own 7-year installation warranty against problems like roof leaks or rattling iron after the job.

Depending on your needs, we use LONGi panels, Sungrow, SolaX and GoodWe inverters, and Enphase microinverters.

Cheaper Home Batteries Program

Thinking about a battery later?

Ask for a hybrid inverter now. It makes adding a battery later simple.

If you want one straight away, the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program can reduce the upfront cost, and we apply it to your quote.

FAQ

Home solar questions

Yes, just less of it. Panels still produce on cool, clear days. Winter is also a smart time to install, because you catch the full spring, summer and autumn run, and the extra power you export helps offset your winter bills.

The Tasmanian Economic Regulator sets a minimum feed-in tariff of approximately 9 cents per kWh (Tasmanian Economic Regulator minimum from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027).

No. We handle the connection application for you.

Yes. New systems get an upfront discount through small-scale technology certificates (STCs), which we include in your quote. The discount gets smaller each year until the scheme ends in 2030.

It depends on the system size, your roof and the gear you choose. We offer a budget range and a premium range, and you get a fixed price in writing after we’ve looked at your place.
