Solar batteries

Solar batteries for Tasmanian homes

A battery stores the solar you make during the day so you can use it at night, instead of sending it to the grid for a few cents. With the federal discount reducing the upfront cost, a battery now makes real financial sense for a lot of Tasmanian homes.

Cheaper Home Batteries Program

Save more on your home battery

Eligible Tasmanian households and small businesses may be able to reduce the upfront cost of a new battery through the Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program.

The available discount depends on the battery system, its usable capacity and the current government program settings. In most cases, the incentive is applied through the installer as part of the system price, rather than something you need to claim separately.

The Tasmanian Government’s Energy Saver Loan Scheme closed to new applications on 1 September 2025. Ask us about other ways to finance your investment.

We can help you understand what support is available and factor it into your battery quote before you make a decision. Just honest advice, even when that means telling you whether a battery does — or does not — make sense for your property.

The discount steps down every six months

What you get

What a battery does for you

Use your solar at night

Run the evening off your own power instead of buying it back.

Back-up in a blackout

Some systems can keep the essentials running until the grid comes back. Ask for it at quote stage.

Less exposure to price rises

The more of your own power you use, the less a tariff change hurts.

Sizing

The right size, not the biggest

Bigger isn't always better. We size your battery to your evening use, your solar output and your inverter, so you're not paying for capacity you'll never fill.

Since May 2026 the discount also tapers above 14 kWh, so the sweet spot has shifted, and we'll show you where it sits for your home.

Existing solar

Adding a battery to existing solar

Most systems can take a battery. If yours is old, small or not performing, we'll check it first and tell you straight whether it's worth upgrading before you add storage.

Not ready yet? A hybrid inverter now makes adding a battery later simple.

One of the easier parts of building a new house with solar. If you prefer no fuss and straight to the point service, then my hot tip is to give Rest Energy a buzz. George was beyond helpful, concise, and when a later issue popped up (due to the house and not the solar), he immediately was in contact to resolve it. I rarely leave a review on anyone, unless the product and service went above and beyond.

My partner and I can thoroughly recommend George and his team in the highest possible way. From the initial discussions to establish our needs, to the quoting process, then the installation itself, things could not have been smoother from our side. This industry does receive bad press because of dodgy operators, this is certainly not the case with Rest Energy Tas, professional in all dealings, on time installation and then always there for ny ongoing queries, not that we have had many as the hand over we received was very extensive. We can only say talk to Rest Energy with his highest recommendation John R

After the great installation of 10kW of solar panels and a Myenergi system 4 years ago by George we decided to take advantage of the recent battery support package and get a FranklinWH system for backup installed. This has a long warranty on all parts. Great work by George with all the tricky work done in one day.

Excellent Service and Fantastic Results! George and his team at Rest Energy installed our solar system in the middle of last year, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. Over summer, we actually had a credit on our power bill, and throughout winter our bill has been minimal. The system has exceeded our expectations in terms of performance and savings. The service has also been outstanding—George has been quick to respond to any questions we've had, and his support has been consistent from installation through to follow-up. Highly recommend Rest Energy for anyone considering going solar!

FAQ

Battery questions

It depends on what you run. If your home draws an average of 1 kW through the evening, 10 kWh of usable capacity lasts around 10 hours. Heaters, ovens and hot water draw far more, so we look at your actual usage before recommending a size.

Only if it’s set up for back-up. Not every system does it, so tell us if it matters to you and we’ll design for it.

No. We apply it upfront on your quote.

Usually, yes, and the discount applies to existing systems too. If your system is old, small or not performing, we’ll check it first and tell you straight whether to upgrade before adding storage.

It depends on the battery system, its usable capacity and the current program settings. It applies to eligible batteries between 5 and 100 kWh, tapers above 14 kWh and steps down every six months. We’ll show you exactly what applies in your quote.
